Global EV sales pass 20 million
Global electric car sales went from about 10.5 million in 2022 to more than 17 million in 2024, and 2025 is expected to pass 20 million.
You are going to see more chargers at malls, apartments, offices, and highway stops because the car market is slowly changing shape.
The extra electric cars sold in 2024 alone were more than all electric cars sold worldwide in 2020.
- China is selling electric cars at huge scale and lower prices.
- Battery prices fell in 2024, making some models easier to afford.
- Charging networks are growing, though not evenly enough for every driver yet.
Your next car choice is becoming less weird and more practical: price, charging access, resale value, and repair options now matter more than the old gas-versus-electric debate.
Behind the numbersOpen
The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook tracks battery-electric and plug-in hybrid car sales worldwide. It reported about 14 million electric cars sold in 2023, up from 10.5 million in 2022, and more than 17 million in 2024. It expected 2025 sales to exceed 20 million and said electric cars could be more than 40% of global car sales by 2030 under stated policies. Caveat: growth is uneven. China is far ahead, Europe slowed in 2024, and U.S. policy uncertainty makes the American path weaker than the global path.
