The line that never moves

I'm just telling it like it is.

The Ego family

I'm just being
honest.

There is a sentence that turns a wound into a favour, and it is said with total sincerity by people who mean well.

Here is that one sentence, growing from a single person all the way to the whole planet.

How it works

Underneath, it's always the same four moves.

1

Something true is said unkindly.

2

The unkindness is filed under honesty.

3

Objecting now looks like objecting to truth.

4

So it is said again, with more confidence.

The same shape every time. Now watch the stage get bigger.

a person mid-sentence, hand raised
Scale 01 · IndividualMe

You say the sharp thing and feel brave rather than unkind.

The relief of finally saying it is real, and it arrives at the same moment as the harm — so the two get filed together, under courage.

It also settles the question of whether you were right to say it, before anyone else has answered.

Ask yourselfThe last hard truth you told — what did you want to happen after it?
two people at a table, one leaning back
Scale 02 · RelationshipUs

Every criticism arrives as a favour you are supposed to thank them for.

Framing it as honesty moves the burden: you are no longer discussing whether it was fair, you are discussing whether you can take it.

So the safe answer is to accept it. Each acceptance confirms the frame, and the next one arrives with less warning.

Ask yourselfWho in your life tells you hard truths and never asks how they landed?
a family dinner table, mid-meal
Scale 03 · HouseholdHome

A relative says the cruel thing at dinner and calls it plain speaking.

The table is the mechanism. An audience turns the remark into a position, and a position cannot be withdrawn without a loss of face.

Everyone else stays quiet to protect the evening, and the silence reads as agreement — which is the evidence it will be repeated on.

Ask yourselfWho at your table is known for saying what everyone else is thinking?
a meeting room, one person standing
Scale 04 · CompanyWork

A senior person is 'refreshingly direct' and everyone else is careful.

Bluntness costs almost nothing when you outrank the room, and it costs a great deal when you do not. So it becomes a privilege that looks like a personality.

Because it is praised, it spreads downward as a style — without the seniority that made it survivable.

Ask yourselfWho is allowed to be blunt where you work, and who is not?
a press briefing, microphones raised
Scale 05 · GovernmentState

Contempt is presented as the courage to say the unsayable.

It works because it is unfalsifiable: any objection can be answered with the objection being the point. Offence taken becomes evidence of a truth landing.

That makes it very cheap to produce and very expensive to answer, which is the whole reason it keeps being produced.

Ask yourselfWhose 'plain speaking' have you defended without checking whether it was true?
a wall of news screens
Scale 06 · WorldEveryone

Whole positions are built out of saying the harsh thing first.

Harshness travels further than accuracy, because it is shorter, and being first to say it is a claim to courage that anyone can make without evidence.

So the incentive is not to be right. It is to be the harshest thing that is still defensible — and that line keeps moving.

Ask yourselfHow much of what you have read this week was brave, and how much was only unkind?
The turn

You will hear it the next time someone hurts you and looks pleased about it.

Listen for the tell: the truth arrives with no plan attached to it. Real honesty is trying to change something and braces for the cost. This version has no request in it, no follow-up, and it always lands in front of an audience. It is not information. It is a position, taken at your expense.

I'm just telling it like it is.
— and it costs the speaker nothing.
